Celebrating 60 years of Double Helix and 10 years of HGP
Dear participants and lecturers
FarGen took its first small steps as a project to identify the potential for human genetics in the Faroes. Coinciding with an acceleration of whole genome sequencing in a research context in 2008, the FarGen idea evolved from focusing on only a few specific Faroese high frequency diseases into a holistic health care model visualising a new health paradigm for personalised health.
Here, both education and the ELSI field play a sig-nificant role, strengthened by the Faroese EHR system and its extensively digitalised genealogy records – paving the way for a translational medicine approach – by sequencing the entire population and integrating the data into the already digitalised health system.
On the research side, the ambition is to establish a state-of-the-art biobank with these data sources. With these words we welcome you to the FarGen Summit in the Faroe Islands 2013, which will focus on some of the achivements since the discovery of the Double Helix and the Human Genome Project to first steps of FarGen, along with a look at the science needed to realise The FarGen Vision – a vision that requires broad and international collaboration. The Conference will be held 19 & 20 September at Hotel Føroyar. The FarGen Summit should thus be regarded both as a presentation of cutting edge science and as an opportunity for partnering and/or joining projects.
